DAY 5: GRACELAND
elvis had quite the knack for decorating, as witnessed by the photos posted below. subtle, refined, tasteful. (actually, kamran thinks that we should bring back shag-carpeted ceilings. it's acoustically great, so it's practical, too!)
the neo-classical exterior:

one must wear headphones - audio tour! People press the buttons at slightly different times (though Kamran kept insisting that he and Johanna synchronize their tours), and listen at different volumes, so, every now and then, when your tour is at a lull, you hear this symphony of Elvis tours bouncing off the (shag-carpeted) walls.

the living room:

the mirrored wall stairwell (a meta-blog note--this photo marks the beginning of Kamran's short-lived turn as photo auteur):

the pool room:

the aforementioned shag carpeting:

the confusingly furry bed presented alongside an appropriately fabulous ensemble:

ah, elvis.

so, these glass animal statues kept popping up around the house. we want some! please check our wishlist at shop.graceland.com.

boarding the lisa marie, complete with plastic-protected velvet bed! note the giant seatbelt for fat elvis:

long live the king! (for what it's worth, johanna snuck upstairs into the forbidden zones of graceland and met the no-longer-fat, now-very-elderly elvis, and had a nice talk with him about a whole range of issues--iraq, organic produce, global warming, and anderson cooper. look for more on this in our other blog. details to follow.)

before leaving memphis, we stopped for some more of those nutritious southern vegetables. kamran, it turns out, is quite partial to fried green tomatoes.

we made it to new orleans in time to eat some beignets before tucking in. delish!

the flash highlights our sweatiness. it's really humid here.
